Youth should take care of elders with respect -Pramod Madhwaraj

Udupi: The ‘World Senior Citizens’ Day’ organised by the district administration was celebrated at the Ravindra Kala Mantap, MGM College here on Sunday, October 1.

The programme began with the state anthem, Niranjan Bhat welcomed the gathering. Pramod Madhwaraj district minister incharge inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

In his message Pramod said that parents bring up their children with great efforts to give them a respectful life in the society. But it is unfortunate that some children neglect their parents. Senior citizens should not feel insecure and it is everyone’s duty to treat them with high respect. Youth should take care of elders and respect their rights.

Nowadays, there are a lot of differences between parents and children due to which the emotional attachment is fast diminishing. Earlier, there was high respect for the eldersg. We need to tell and teach the young generation to respect and realize their esponsibility towards their aged parents.
The State government has been taking measures for the welfare of senior citizens. Authorities concerned should take necessary steps to ensure elders receive the benefits they must form such schemes, he added.

Seven senior citizens including P N Acharya Udupi (Art), Dr B V Markande (Poetry), Narashimha Shettigar, Lalitha Naika (Sports), Dr Neri Cornelio (Education), Nandalike Balachandra Rao (Social Work), Dr M R Hegde (Medical) were felicitated on the occasion by Pramod Madhwaraj.

District civil judge Latha, Taluk Panchayat president Nalini Pradeep Rao, District Bar Association president Rathnakar Shetty, Women and child development department assistant director Gracy Gonsalves, Sarala Kanchan, A P Kodancha and others were present.

Each and every parent should receive best possible respect and support from their children, especially when they are getting old. But the times are going thru various challenges, and therefore many children find it difficult to help their parents. Family value systems are also changing, and therefore as much as possible, the parents have to safeguard their own interest during their retirement stage.
