Youth Threatens to Jump from Roof of Ideal Ice-cream Building, Rescued

Mangalore:  A youth created panic among the people as he climbed on the roof of Ideal Ice cream parlour Hampankatta here on August 9.

The unidentified youth climbed on the roof of Ideal ice-cream parlour in Hampankatta. He was requested by the police as well as other youth to get down, but he was reluctant and threatened to jump down the roof. Finally, after 2 hours of drama, he was secured by the firemen along with some of the youth and brought down.

The youth has been identified as Faheem Salman (25), from Palakunnu, Bekal and is a barber by profession.

According to the police, Faheem was in the city for shopping. But instead of buying clothes, he brought liquor and got drunk. Later in an inebriated state he climbed the roof of Ideal Ice Cream parlour Building. At around 7:35 pm some people saw him running on the roof. and informed the police.

Bunder police along with the fire brigade arrived at the spot. The fire tenders climbed the roof and requested Faheem to get down but he was reluctant and threatened to jump off the roof. He demanded cigarettes and money. Some youth provided him Cigarette. Slowly they surrounded him from all the sides and while he was attempting to jump they grabbed him. Securing him well while he was still trying to get off their grip he was safely brought down.

The Bunder police took Faheem to the government Wenlock hospital for medical check-up.

Later the police informed Faheem’s parents who are on their way from Palakunnu to the Bunder police station. Faheem created panic among the huge crowd who were in shock watching and praying for his safety. Many youth were heard requesting Faheem not to play with the life.

The fire service personnel namely Shekhar, Suresh, Naveenchandra, Kishore, Annappa, Wilson, Ramesh and Sunil along with a local youth Rizwan put their lives in risk and climbed the roof of the building. After trying to convince Fahim and buying time, they provided him cigarettes which he had demanded and planned their course of action. Finally, after 2 hours of their efforts, Faheem was overpowered, secured and brought down the building. The huge crowd that gathered below heaved a sigh of relief seeingFaheem being brought down safely. The police had to resort to mild lathi charge to control the public.
