  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on And There Shall Be Water! Bishop Peter Sadanha's Words turns into Miracle in Bajpe

Presence of Timelgood Leaders in these times is as important as many other miracles. Bishop Peter Paul has proven to be a good Leader who follows the steps of Emiratus Bishop Aloysius. Under their joint leadership Mangalore will witness many more great things in the years to come. Let us pray for their good health and happiness so that Mangalore will witness many more great things in future days. Timely rain and sufficient rain in India each year is as precious a gift alike many other gifts that India deserves in addition to peace and harmony.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Did You Know 'Smart City' has a New Shopping Arcade' on NH-17? Not Smart At All!

New Shopping Arcades, new Cinemas, new Restaurants, new Parking Lots are all important features that need be included in the “Smart City” concept for Mangalore, but there are many more “essentials” that have to be introduced for Mangalore in order to enable the City to enjoy all the “Smart City” priorities. We need the City to be zoned properly where the Hospitals, Schools, Colleges, Libraries, Performing Art Centers, and also the Parks and Recreations to be given equal prominence. Roadside vendors also need prominence and importance, but these roadside displays of all handicrafts and ‘cottage industry’ products need be expose only few week ends so that people can walk across the display stands on family outings. The City needs equal importance on cleanliness, frequent garbage collections and constant monitoring on general hygiene so that people are fully aware of the City laws. City has to focus on High Technology sectors that could bring more know-how with new Educational awareness and new plans to cope with future challenges. The City has to encourage inviting foreign dignitaries, including all the local expertise to be encouraged to visit the city periodically with series of lectures and public audiences with new ideas to appear and all possibilities for future establishment. The “Smart City” concept is a group effort of all private and public involvements with independent groups to monitor periodically the progress achieved thru various new old and new developments. The “Smart City” is a “big picture” concept that should be viewed with a patriotic attitude because it will transform the ever-growing Town into a modern city with prospects to change and benefit all facets of Social life, Economic life, Educational life where Society will continue to grow and prosper in line with other “Smart Cities” of India.

What is even more appropriate is to re-name the Matsyagandha Express in his honour, as there does not appear to be any direct connection between George Fernandes and Mangalore airport. But then again I am torn -Matsyagandha is the most appropriate name for that train. May be, like someone else suggested, Mangalore junction could be named after him as a compromise.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on We are bound by our humanity: Shaikh Mohammad on Pope's visit

This is indeed a historic event for the Christians and the Moslems of the world. The spirit of “Internationalism” that has always been practiced by the Citizens of U.A.E. has now come into reality. The visit of His Holiness, Pope Francis to U.A.E. has paved the way for a new era of justice and equality amongst all the religions of the world, particularly the Christians as well as the Moslems. The leaders of U.A.E. have brought a new awareness to the people of the region that we are all children of one God, and we all can live in peace and harmony for today, tomorrow and always in our life. There is so much to be enjoyed in life, and therefore may this Holy visit of Pope Francis bring a new climate of peace and reconciliation to the world at large, and bring greater happiness to mankind.

But this intelligent creature knowing what is right and wrong had chosen to kill after enjoying them has to be one of the worst things to be born on this earth and deserves only capital punishment. • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on ‘Know your Rights’ Workshop at St Aloysius College

The Constitution is a single most important document for any country to possess, preserve and honor in order to cherish our individual as well as group rights. The Constitution will enable all of us to respect the spirit and meaning of the document that forefathers had painfully prepared for the benefit of all the citizens. In a country such as India where we have so many cultures, religions, languages, and even colors, a Constitution is indeed a sacred document that will protect all our legitimate rights and interests so that each one of us safeguard our individual and group rights. India is also surrounded by other nations such as China, Pakistan and Bangla Desh who also are obliged to understand our existing rights and privileges and safeguard our neighborly obligations for a smooth and harmonious relations with each other. W are glad to note that St. Aloysius College is taking all the pains and efforts in familiarizing all the young students our legitimate rights as Citizens of India, and how we need to treat each other in good times and tough times. • From Siva on St Aloysius College Pays Homage to Sri George Fernandes

Mangaluru should be proud of its son who contributed to the nation in multiple ways. Being born in Managluru but becoming a popular and strong trade union leader in Bombay of yesteryears –where outsiders, particularly the south Indians were not liked, — is a great achievement. And from there, going to Muzzapur, Bihar and creating a strong supporter base, getting rejected from a far off place which was neither a birthplace nor a place where he developed trade union leadership is not something ordinary mortals can achieve, it requires special capabilities, very special ones! To contest an election sitting in jail with the highest margin in the country, the record of which was not broken speaks of the man that George Fernandes. As a defence minister, he went to Siachen a record 18 times to be with the Soldiers and show them we are with them. He was a true son of Baharthmata. His association with the BJP leaders is very difficult to comprehend. In fact, if my memory serves me right and reasoning is right, he may be one of the reasons for the existence of BJP. After Janasangh was dissolved while forming the Janata party, its erstwhile leaders continued association with RSS. If I remember right, George Fernandes was one of those who objected the Janata leaders continuing to maintain their association with RSS which he called ‘Dual Membership’. The leaders who did not want to disassociate with RSS, formed their own party, BJP. The fact that George Fernandes not only continued the friendship with those leaders, but stitched the alliance of his party (Samata party) with BJP to form the NDA and ultimately becoming its convener, yet retaining all his socialist ideas and ideology. If that is not political ingenuity of highest order, what is! And even though he was away from his birthplace he played a very significant role in moving forward the Konkan Railway project which languished for more than a century after conception. I doubt this project would ever have seen light if not for him. Of course, in my opinion, the coastal region is not using this Railway line to its potential and nor did we give respect to Geoge Fernandes to the extent that we should have given. That is what I want to point out. I think it is time that we Mangalureans give him proper recognition – a landmark, a beautiful and useful memorial, airport name, prominent street name, or any other suitable idea. For this, all people should come together irrespective of party, religion, language or any other affiliation as here is a son of Mangalore who became an institution by himself. We are, we should be proud and show that we are proud of him. oh, by the way, this is not for him as that great soul is Resting In Peace. This is for us and our future generations of Mangaluru.

It is a joy to learn that the India Social Forum celebrated the India Republic Day in Riyadh in the presence of various dignitaries. Saudi Arabia has always cherished the close friendship with India because both countries have strived together for peace and prosperity. Tens of thousands of Indians have given their best of loyal work to Saudi Arabia and have never interfered with the local politics. Today, India is also proving to be a valued customer of Saudi Arabia because India has a great deal of hydrocarbons to buy from Saudi Arabia. May the close relations between India and Saudi Arabia continue to prevail all the time so that both the nations may continue to live with mutual friendship and solidarity and the people of India and Saudi Arabia continue to live with peace and happiness.

There is a fundamental flaw in Donald Trump’s idea that only a “very strong form of physical barrier” will stop criminals, drugs, gangs and human trafficking. All the information hitherto available to the intelligence agencies and those responsible for homeland security in the U.S.A. clearly shows that the main ports of entry are NOT at the southern border. However, the 45th POTUS has an obsessive, compulsive desire to build a wall in spite of all the facts to the contrary. And, he will use every possible way to do so. It is clear he does not want to be confused by the facts to build his “great, big, beautiful” wall.

Late Dr. Venkat Rao was one of the original pioneers of Fr Muller’s Charitable Institution. He was a successor to Dr. Lorsab and Dr Mathews and changed the entire outlook of Fr. Muller’s with new technologies and new ideas. He was wholeheartedly supported by late Fr. Reginald Pinto and late Fr. Marian Fernandes. Dr. Venkat Rao brought a new name and fame for Fr. Mullers Hospital by attracting thousands of new patients who came to Fr. Mullers because of Dr. Venkat Rao. We as a family had close association with Dr. Venkat Rao who was virtually our neighbor. He came to Fr. Mullers when he was a bachelor, and when he got married he brought additional fame to our neighborhood. Dr. Venkat Rao was a kind-hearted person, and he rendered free medical services to hundreds of patients that visited Fr Mullers Hospital as well as his home when they could not afford medical services. We distinctly remember that when Mother Theresa first visited Fr. Mullers Leprosy Asylum several decades ago, Dr. Venkat Rao was there to first meet Saint Mother Theresa and greet her. We are so pleased that in the name of late Dr. Venkat Rao many worthy ideas being generated. This is an excellent idea, and late Dr. Venkat Rao deserves all the worldly recognitions.

This shut down of the federal government is the longest in U.S. history. President Donald Trump owns this shut down. In his own words at a meeting in the Oval Office with Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, the President said that he is proud to own this shut down. Instead of building a wall that was supposed to be paid for by the Mexican government, a non-starter from day 1, 800,000 Americans are unpaid for 32 days for a wall that’s not going to be built and that the majority of Americans do not want. The President’s intransigence is having grave consequences for the unpaid Americans and their families, and will have a deleterious effect on the U.S. economy.

The murder of the Washington Post columnist and Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey was a heinous crime that merits a thorough international, independent, transparent investigation. The Saudi government’s lies, changing stories and crude attempts to cover up this murder should not be unpunished. Justice must be done and perceived to be done. Tantri Kantaravru Rajeeveru’s purification ritual after two women visited the Sabarimala shrine, in defiance of the Supreme Court’s directive that allowed all women entry into the shrine, reflects insubordination and disrespect for the rule of law. Frankly, the restrictions on the entry of women are absurd, particularly so at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. It is high time these outdated rituals are discarded. • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Cleanliness & good health are inter-related - Dr Shivashankar Murthy

Cleanliness is next to Godliness is a clear saying that is fully applicable to a country such as India where the population is thriving all over our Cities, towns and villages. The daily garbage that is thrown all over the place without any concern is unbelievable. How much can a Municipality or a Punchayath render to the people while the budgets are limited and the relevant taxes collected are negligible. While people are conscious of the need for cleaner environments and cleaner sanitary procedures, the Government resources are indeed limited while the overall daily needs are enormous. Compared to many Cities of India, the City of Mangalore deserves the timely praise because we are striving the utmost to keep our City clean and organized. Our trash is collected regularly and the place is kept clean and neat. We even noticed that the domestic garbage is even collected regularly with enough warning, and the neighborhood is awakened by the crew in uniform coming to collect domestic garbage. Cleanliness throughout the city is improving every day, and our City fathers are more vigilant than many other cities of India. We are great believers that the “Smart City” concept does not merely relate to high technology and various costly and time consuming devices, but the daily cleanliness and upkeep of every corner of the city is of paramount importance. India has abundance of rich people who need to come forward voluntarily and help the City to maintain orderliness and clean environment. Let all our teachers and students in every Educational Institute come forward and teach the rest of the world the importance of clean environment. Let the pubic learn the substance of the benefit of cleaner city that will bring healthy atmosphere of reminder to each and everyone that cleanliness helps to bring healthier outlook to the entire city as a whole. This is the best time Mangalore should wake up and become a role model to the rest of India.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Best place for expats: 73% of foreigners in UAE earn more than in their home country

Expats throughout the Persian Gulf region have always played an important role in so many daily functions of their respective professions. Whether they are Doctors or Engineers, or whether they are Accountants or Secretaries, all of them or most of them come to the Gulf region with a distinct purpose and give their very best of dedication to the profession they belong to. A large portion of the expatriates leave their families behind to take care of their daily needs which also include their children education. Living in foreign countries throughout the contractual term is tough. Many expat professions also include many domestic jobs such as cooks, butlers, as well as many skills such as Nurses, Carpenters, Waiters and even gardeners and drivers who render a loyal service for the entire duration of their contract. Everything in this world of profession is a “give and take” service that serves a mutually beneficial service. It’s a service that is mutual and filled with loyalty and dignity. India is no doubt one of the best country that has proven to be one of the best nation that has been known as the trustworthy country for development of reliable human capital that will always continue to provide the best of human labor to one and all that deserve such service. May God bless them all.

This ancient and time tested form of activity, is what keeps our body functioning well, with all the 7 vital parts such as the brain, the eyes, lungs, heart, stomach, the kidneys, and our limbs in good shape, along with a good look at God’s creation, the amazing sunrise and the life that it springs into all that dwells in the sky, on the earth, below the earth, and in the sea, or the awesome sunset! Those who do not find a early morning walk convenient, should for an evening walk on the beach or in the park. Always carry drinking water in a half litre shoulder strap pvc/aluminium bottle that are commercially available, and stay hydrated, as Mangalore or South India is hot and humid. Walking at a good steady pace for an approx. up and down distance of 5 to a max of 7km is the most ideal workout one would require to keep the body healthy and strong. It’s free from timings, free from special footwear, free from special clothing, and most of all it’s FREE OF COST!

I see that week after week, so much work is done. yet so much remains which means 2 things. 1. A lot of people are still irresponsible. It pains that educate cultured people of Mangaluru have still not embrace cleanliness. 2. Mangaluru corporation is not doing its duty incerely. Good that commisioner is now involved and is talking about cooperation. Here are a few humble suggestions (Nothing new and some of these may be already in place and may be I don’t know) 1. Every week, there should be one team exclusively doing survey along with Mangaluru corporation officials (only those who are enthusiastic) and identify all areas of Mangaluru that needs to be cleaned. If corporators also can take part without party banners and work with citizens, this survey becomes easy. 2. Have a dedicated website for this and let people give suggestions; post photos. IT companies in and around Mangaluru can take up this task of creating and maintaing a dedicated website as part of their CSR. 3. A committee of officials, volunteers, Swamis of RK Ashram can decide which one to be taken by Sunday Swatchata Drive, what should Corporation do (For example, installing and cleaning trash bins in the public places). Mangaluru MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Mangaluru MLAs could contribute and plan to meaningfully contribute to this by developing and implementing plans using their development funds. Mangalore has so many highly intelligent individuals; so many engineering and other colleges with some professors teaching public health; and many more intellectuals. They should come forward (may be on a active basis or by means of suggestions on the website). 4. Finally a suggestion for Mangalorean or anyone else publishes these photos. You are doing a great job. It would be really good if you can please publish ‘before’ and ‘after’ side by side or next to each other and also it would be great to print the location information next to the picture.

  • From Melroy C.F.Fernandes on 2019 LOK SABHA ELECTIONS: Will it be Modi’s way or the Highway?

Voters cannot be said to have learned any lessons and therefore wisened if they keep alternately choosing between the black pot(miscellaneous brands), the black pan(miscellaneous brands) and the fire (there being no other choice;NOTA not being a person). Voters have to take the initiative to educate themselves so that they can choose wisely, instead of just gambling (like purchasing a “lottery” and hoping to win) their lives away by choosing between politicians and their parties which use different names but are essentially same/similar in character and which use “policies” which are carrying India toward disaster for the last 71 years. For solutions to the problems we are facing, I recommend reading “Breaking free of Nehru – Let’s unleash India” by Sanjeev Sabhlok https://bfn.sabhlokcity.com/ (it is generous of him to have made it available for free download so that even those who cannot afford can read it). For sometime, there was a progressive political party called “Loksatta” led by Dr. J.P.Narayan but around 2014 they have jumped off the political band wagon as they cannot compete with the “big-bucks political parties” and because in Dr. JP’s own words, “ Indians are still not ready for change”. Essentially almost all Indians are/have been turned into “freeloaders , cripples dependent on the govt. to think for them and religious zombies” living off State funds & corrupt to the core and they wish for the status quo to continue . If India does not reform (shunning socialism, communism and immediately delinking religion, tradition, culture from governance of the State) then India is soon going to go the way of : Venezuela Cuba “Cuba and the cameraman” – 1hr documentary made over the course of 45 years between 1970’s to 2K by Jon Alpert. • From Melroy C.F.Fernandes on Japanese citizen Kane Suzuki flags off RKM's 3rd Shramadan of Swacchata Abhiyan

It’s nice to see the RK missionaries, led by a missionary Swami clad in his missionary robes, conducting, with missionary zeal, the weekly/ monthly/annual/phased swacchata abhiyan as part of civil society contribution to the Swacch Bharat Mission(which in its earlier avatar, pre-2014, was named “total sanitation campaign” and “nirmal bharat abhiyan”). As is quite apparent, the previous names were totally uncatchy, unmissionary and unmarketable names not drawing people from around the world, film stars, sports-stars, captains and missionary-stars to crowd into the photo-frame. I particularly like the Warli art and other art works on the walls of the city as a result of the “Shram-dan” by the missionaries from the RK ashram or is it math(they sure are good at it). I cringe to see the able- Japanese citizen Kane sweeping the dusty and dirty roads of Mangal-uru; he now has first-hand experience of what one feels when one jumps from the (Ja)pan into the fire(quite literally, considering that the streets of Japan are what “cleanliness” and “hygiene” define). Not being “intelligent” I request some “smart” people to clear my doubts : (1) Doesn’t Shram-dhan mean “voluntary contribution of labour for a public cause”? Doesn’t “dhan” mean to donate and not take from one hand and give back only a little using the other? (2) If above is so , then why is MRPL-ONGC(a company owned by the people of India) paying RK Mission to conduct these heavily photo-op’d and publicised swacchata abhiyans. Under its CSR scheme, MRPL has paid RK Mission: Rs.10 lakh 40 thousand to build bath cum toilet blocks in FY 2013-14; Rs. 14 lakh “financial assistance” for Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan in FY 2015-16; Rs. 20 lakh(with a commitment of upto 50 lakh) for the SB mission jamboree in FY 2016-17; https://mrpl.co.in/sites/default/files/Primister%20Office%20%20CSR%20Activity_0.pdf https://mrpl.co.in/sites/default/files/Swach%20Bharath%20Abhiyaan%20Activities%20of%20MRPL.pdf Well for FY 18-19 we have no publicly available data. So MRPL has paid RK Mission Rs.44.4/- lacs between 2013-14 to 2017 years. (pls note that the RK missionaries are not the only beneficiaries of the MRPL CSR funds. Never mind that MRPL feels no CSR toward the people they have forcefully displaced from their homes and lands and have no “funds” to pay these people their rightful share). (3) Was RK Mission conducting these heavily photo-op’d and publicised swacchata abhiyans prior to 2014? What caused the sudden love for the nation? The Nation wants to know! (4) I cannot help wondering how after so many phased “swacchata abhiyans” the brooms – held by the posing missionary-stars, the captains, the “Japanese in Manga-luru” and the elected reps. in the photo-sessions – look brand-new? How do you do it? Is the weekly work(2 – 4 hrs) so hardly (un)rough that you need to buy new equipment every week? Or, are these props kept separate for use during the photo-ops only. (5) Where is all the dirt and debris dumped after collection? Is it the NIMBY policy that is followed? Is the garbage segregated and disposed as per the waste disposal policy of the govt.? (RK Mission had conducted one such “abhiyan” in my Panchayat area and I heard that the collected garbage, after all the public “show” was over, was simply dumped from one conspicuous place to another “ out of sight is out of mind” place!) (6) Isn’t whatever the RK Mission is doing, actually the job of the MCC? So why are all the Corporators, MLA’s, MP’s and MLC’s who pose for the photo-ops not actually doing their job! Why is the govt. not held accountable for the civic works? (7) We are all charged a Swacch Bharat Cess by the govt. in our bills., where does all that money collected from 1.3 billion people go? (is it used to build statues and headquarters). (8) My Panchayat does not even collect any garbage. I collect the plastics , pay for the transportation and hand it over to the Panchayat and they happily burn it alongwith the other waste in their backyard posing grave health risks to the neighbourhood and the person burning the plastics. Practically everyone else throws their waste(including plastics) into the nearest rain water drainage channel, where it collects until the monsoon season and the rains faithfully wash it into the sea. So much for Swacch Bharat and pollution control! To wind up, MRPL should spend our public money wisely by donating, to the district administration , a large approved-for- the -purpose incinerator to burn the plastics with minimum air-pollution. All plastics should be collected from all over the district by each of the concerned authorities and sent to this centralised location. The concerned civic authorities should get their act together and do their job for which they collect taxes from the citizen. Public money should not be spent in promoting certain organisations, associations and religions who are bent on spoiling the govt.(for their own personal benefit) instead of holding the govt. accountable. MRPL could have spent those 44.4 lacs better by giving “dhan” to the poor municipal sweepers and garbage collectors for the education and betterment of their children and in providing these workers personal protection clothing and gear to safeguard their health while working rather than pouring it down the drain in making some rich people and some rich organisations richer!

  • From Richard Thomas on A Green Ride! MBC & SAC Bicyclists Rode the City Spreading Message on Pollution

All these campaigns are an eyewash when it comes to building better roads, better traffic signs, better traffic management and policing, and keeping those smoking/polluting buses and trucks off the roads. Worst than Pollution is the state of the roads during the rainy season and thereafter – and no matter how many craters exist on the main road, nothing is ever taken up to get them fixed, even on a dry day. So far booking and penalizing has had minimum or no effect at all – and this PUC law is simply a business, that is set up on a low cost- one lady – managed business set up at Petrol Stations all over the country. If PUC was truly implemented in a stringent and effective manner – one would never find those black smoking buses and trucks. Agents at the Traffic Dept. manage their business very well, hand in gloves with all the staff of the Transport Dept or RTO, and this keeps everyone happy in the game named Pollution Under Control!

I support Prof Nayak in his pursuit of scientific inquiry. After all he has staked his entire property if proved wrong, so he would be the loser. The late Mother Teresa had never claimed to be a saint, she was herself treated at hospitals by “non-saints” (men of science) and that too in “phoren” lands. It is people who claim that she is a saint ( that a certain religious organization “capitalized” this claim is no wonder). Her work when she was alive makes her worthy to have been called a “living saint”(irrespective of her motives and beliefs). The recent “miracle” of the THE POTTA nearly getting drowned and the recent “miracles” of Attur Jatre, Karkala, having to go with a begging bowl to politicians to fund them in building more superstructures that too from the poor tax-payers’ money speaks volumes of these “miracle”workers.

  • From Richard Thomas on Kundapur Woman loses Rs 7.75 Lakh in online fraud

Wonder why and how people do not learn that E-Commerce is the most unreliable and the most fraud-infested technology ever invented. So many people get cheated doing online transactions, and sadly the authorities still encourage that everything should be transacted on-line despite so many news articles worldwide of how easily people steal money. I strongly recommend people to conduct any transaction in the old and trusted ways – like go personally to the Bank to withdraw cash with a Slip or a Cheque, or take a Statement from inside the bank – thus avoiding the ATM and the scams in which people have lost a lot of money. ATM’s are Third Party owned and operated. Cameras do not stop crime and loss! Shopping or applying for a Franchisee should also be done in person at an address – and not online. In this manner, you know the person or the company whom you interact with, the office or location that you visit and conduct business with. Banks are also involved in financial scams so much so that these cheats have legitimate accounts in banks – where they ask one to transfer large amounts of money – and so all the absurd ideas of KYC and Aadhar Card implemented by the RBI and the Indian government goes down the drain! The Internet is good for information, studies and news only- even using it for correspondence is not safe – the old way of letter writing is much safe and reliable – and guaranteed no one can snoop.

The business of keeping an area of a city or a town clean has two sides. First the Municipality should install sufficient garbage bins in all public places such Bus Stations, Bus Stops, Train Stations, Rick Stands, Taxi Stands, Movie Halls, Parks, and on all main roads. This being done, People must be educated in the benefit of disposing off garbage properly. Then the Municipality sweep and clean all the main and bye-lanes on a every day basis. Last resort, impose heavy penalty on those found littering – even the poor litter as they do not want to pay the small charge the Municipality levies for collection and removal of garbage on a daily basis.

The sense of cleanliness and hygiene needs to be inculcated in the minds and hearts of children from infancy. But this does not happen in most of the households, because in our culture, we think that cleaning is the servant’s job. As long as we don’t own up cleaning our environs as a personal responsibility, we can’t expect for the situation to change for the better. Only way forward is to include cleanliness in the School curriculum from very early stage of schooling, and doing this in practical ways, so that the kids would learn this as a way of life.

Good roads and good infrastructure directly reflect on the good management of the authorities appointed. Also, the City Bus Stand in Udupi should be made FREE from all those North Karnataka labourers who have made this place their den for all types of vices, drinking, matka, prostitution, illegal vending, labour bonding, etc. The Superintendent of Police Mr. Laxman should look into this and act. This Bus Stand has become a total mess in recent years. Ladies and girls are not safe at all in this area when some many drunkards are found lingering or laying on the footpaths. • From Richard Thomas on 'Strict Laws to be Enforced for Setting Up Mobile/TV Towers'- Minister U T Khader

The problem in India is, most Ministers are not educated in the portfolio they have been given as Ministers – it’s just a title they are given with a fat salary and unimaginable allowances – they call it Politics. A Minister with Bachelor of Arts education is given a portfolio of Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, and so on. Laws and Regulations must have a separate body made up of trade specific educated and professionals so that they can draft out a regulation code, and a law that will be implemented in the strictest sense, before a certain technology takes root, such as Mobile Phones, SIM cards, and Mobile Phone Towers. SIM cards and installation of Mobile Towers on private home and building towers should have been regulated in its budding stages. Now it is too late to implement a new law – because most of the late laws do not provide for Plan B, such as where will the authority be able to shift and install all the Mobile Towers that are already installed. The Mobile companies are obviously paying money to those homes and building owners where they have installed the Towers – same like Advertisement hoardings – there is no law or regulation, where they should be installed, and private homes and buildings and sites where they are installed, receive money from the advertisement companies or individuals. Why are SIM cards not issued as a virtual number to that individual who has subscribed to it, and why are SIM cards being registered in multiple names upon not being recharged and upon being cancelled from it’s owners name, just to generate money in the name of business. Same goes with Ration Card, Voters Card, Aadhar Card that are asked as a proof of ID, and whereas India lacks a National Identity Card, that should rightly be adopted and issued to every Indian national without any expiration date, as one proof of Identity. As Aadhar Card and Ration Cards have been carried even by nationals of neighbouring countries. The authorities are themselves at loggerheads with the true intention of an Aadhar Card. Let’s be real and practical as Indians!

When you give to the needy do not announce it with trumpets………………. when you give to the needy do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing ………………. ” – Matthew 6:1-4 Finally, I close with the truth and reality which no hypocrite will admit to: “Nobody ever saw a dog make a fair and deliberate exchange of one bone for another with another dog………But man has almost constant occasion for the help of his brethren and it is in vain for him to expect it from their benevolence only……….. Give me that which I want and you shall have this which you want, is the meaning of every such offer and it is in this manner that we obtain from one another the far greater part of those good offices which we stand in need of ” – Adam Smith ( The Wealth of Nations)

  • From drona on Death, Fear and Pain To Animals! Why are People Ignorant in Bursting Loud Firecrackers?

Melroy, while you may be agnostic or an atheist, please remember that a vast majority are believers in God or the supreme being. I totally agree that animal cruelty is largely preventable and some thing like fire crackers are unnecessary. I do not claim that I am a vegetarian as such but I prefer vegetarian. I get repulsed at the thought of animal slaughter. May be it is demand and supply chain which keeps the slaughter houses busy. If we stop using meat, slaughter houses will not be needed. You may quote Bose regarding plant life. Obviously human beings are healthier with vegetarian diet. Fish of course is good. You catch it and not slaughter. I know Prof Nayak does not believe in God. That is OK. He does lots of social service and serves the God he does not accept.Paropakaaram punyaaya, paapaaya parapeedanam. Do some charity work this Christmas. You will find so many unfortunate poor people who look forward to Christmas not because they can afford to celebrate it but they accept Jesus and celebrate his birth. That is a happy time for lots of Christians and others. Make some people happy, share a meal with them or buy a simple gift. That is the spirit of Christmas. As far as Diwali goes, we all know what it stands for. May the light of diwali and the candle of Christmas guide all of us to live happy. Live and let live.

  • From Melroy C.F.Fernandes on Death, Fear and Pain To Animals! Why are People Ignorant in Bursting Loud Firecrackers?

Answers: (1) Animals(other than humans) do not have any religion. This is because God(if there is one or a zillion) created REGION ,man added a LI(E) in between and created RE-LI-GION. Therefore, bursting fire-crackers affects animals in the same manner whether it is Diwali, New Year or Christmas or Eid. (2) Animals (other than humans) do not vote in elections so it does not matter to animals whether JR Lobo wins or loses. Therefore, bursting fire crackers by JR Lobo’s victory celebration before or after election results , last year or whenever , also frightens animals and makes them scared(that includes the sacred animals too). (3) Plants have as much life and can feel in their own way but that is not perceptible to animals (like human beings) who can only feel when they are pinched. None other than Dr.J.C. Bose, of pure Indian race, proved this scientifically. Therefore, please be kind to animals and plants this Christmas , Diwali and Eid and everyday and eat nothing. For those who believe in RELIGION the word of God should be enough!

The success of a small Export firm in succeeding to export of a million dollar worth of Indian Tea to China is a step that is praiseworthy. China is a tough buyer, and the credit worthiness of Indian Exporter needs all the support from the Government so that many more millions worth of India Tea finds its way to China. India deserves all the boost in exporting the Tea or Coffee or any other spices to China, our neighboring partner who can absorb much more products from India at a most competitive price. Our quality of performance in exports to China need all the Government support thru incentives that are widely open for future expansion. We are pleased with this good news, and wish the Indian Tea Exporter best of success.

Can we stop slaughtering animals for naalige chapala? Pigs are pit in boiling hot water and skinned alive during the month of Dec. Is it not animal cruelty? Sheep are slaughtered during eid. Is it peaceful? I appeal all to consider switching over to veg biryani and veg curries and consume fish and eggs instead of chicken and other meat. Be kind to animals. This Christmas eat Veg.

Dear Alfie – Thank you very much for your superb and well-crafted article on the Felicitation of Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha by CASK, along with appropriate photographs. I am particularly grateful to you for mentioning and appreciating the simple yet highly dignified honouring of the Bishop we did – by not seating him on a throne or special chair and not adorning him with paraphernalia like shawl, peta, fruit basket – We presented him with a meaningful 12-point citation, a memento and two Air-purifying Indoor Plants which His Lordship can cherish and treasure. As I mentioned in my introduction, CASK made a Statement that this was done with our greatest admiration and appreciation Bishop Peter Paul for molding himself on the persona of Pope Francis and because we are greatly inspired by his simplicity, humility and outreach to the poor, just like Pope Francis. Thank you once again – Dr Derek Lobo, Past President-CASK

The Hi-Tech Kosamma Hajji Abdullah Maternity Hospital in Udupi was nevertheless built and completed by Mr. B.R. Shetty’s Contractor during the sand unavailability crisis. Many other apartment projects in Mangalore too were built and completed by various builders during the same period. Therefore sand crisis is not real – it only affects those who do not know how to source it. Politicians love to be in the news all the while instead of working quietly, and taking care of their responsibilities.

  • From MCF on Why Decibel Levels Need to be Brought Down Everywhere

Dear Sir, Thank you very much for the article. It assumes greater significance in the aftermath of the railway line accident in Punjab which to a large degree was a result of the numbing of the hearing( temporary threshold shift of hearing caused by exposure to very loud noise) and eye-sight(blinded due to bright high intensity light) senses of the persons involved including the train driver , which would have helped in the “flight or fight” response of the human “animal instinct”. Thousands of bombs exploding during the burning of the Raavan worsened by the probable use of huge loudspeakers would have drowned any sound of the train and its horn. High intensity light would have temporarily blinded the persons involved similar to when the opposite vehicle on the road does not dip or reduce the intensity of its headlights thus blinding the driver or person approaching from the opposite direction of the road. Nature has endowed the man animal with 5 senses for his survival.

In Brahmavar, we had Gloria Jyothi Band by Salins family and New Star Band by Suares family. As children and teenagers, we used to be mesmerized by the beautiful tunes they played. There were also good bands in Perampally and Malpe which were also occasionally invited to play in our area. I think only a few have managed to survive the orchestra led music scenario in weddings and celebrations these days. Miss those days.

The best and the biggest contribution that each and every Indian can make in the present time, in addition to the spirit of non-violence, influence each and every Indian to keep away from the addiction of drugs and alcohol. In a densely populated India, the spread of addiction to Alcohol and drugs will be a disaster. This virus will be very contagious and dangerous. In the name of Mahatma Gandhi each and everyone should whisper a message of caution to every other Indian that usage of alcohol and drugs because the addiction will destroy the new generation and will also obstruct the survival of our future. Although Mahatma Gandhi was educated in his Law Degree in England and then practiced his profession in South Africa prior to his return to India, we do not think Mahatma had any idea in those years the influence of Alcohol or drugs. There were many other priorities that occupied the mind of Bapuji. His vision was focused on the necessity of human freedom and human justice. He returned to India with that focus in mind and he succeeded in his goals and aspirations of life. Let us, therefore, dedicate each of our lives for the cause and ideals of Mahatma and see how we can save India from all hazards and dangers ahead of us thru Alcohol and Drugs. May God save India from this deadly virus.

It is their job to patrol all public places such as the bus stands, bus terminals, railway terminals, railway platforms, gardens, parks, the beaches, cinemas, supermarkets, fruits and veg markets, fish markets, etc. all the time. Why should the public call or report to the police, when it is their primary job to keep safety and security in check at all times? Transgenders should be banned from harassing the public for money or should be *******d if they go off limits – the police will not be there to protect anyone.

Smart City concept has different faces and different phases to offer. Everything depends on the budgets that are made available so that all plans and programs can be chalked out in preparation of a long journey ahead of us. The authorities are aware of their responsibilities and accordingly all the tasks will be undertaken. Everything takes time. Let there be proper systems established so that the public is made aware of the phase by phase construction that is being programed. We have to place our confidence in the hands of those that are accountable. Let us remain complacent that everything will take place as planned. I was there sixtyfive years ago before the Kuloor Bridge was constructed. In those days all the to-and-fro traffic, whether it is vehicles or even the bullock carts and cycles had to be transported by a floating barge called “jungle”. It used to take about two hours to cross the Kuloor river back and forth, but life went on because there was no other choice. Then came the bridge 65 years ago. What a blessing that was. But for 65 years, we do not think the bridge was ever maintained or checked for it’s strength and present capacity. For 65 years millions of vehicles must have crossed the bridge, and the vehicle loads have increased day by day. Thanks to all the authorities for their timely thought to maintain the bridge with whatever new supports or renovations that are required. Safety of people and the moving traffic is essential. With the expansion of the port facilities, the bridge plays an important role in the daily existence of life as a whole. Hence, the timely focus on the safety and maintenance of the bridge is a thought that deserves all the praises and thanks too.

A Student Council in any Educational Institution is very important. In a Medical Institution a Student Council can be very instrumental in generating new ideas and suggestions that can attribute so many short term and long term benefits not only for the students but also for the patients that utilize the services of the Institution. Any matters relating to health are vital to the community that depends on the effectiveness of the Medical Institution. The students have so many bright ideas to express and share with the authorities. Many of these ideas can be difficult to compromise due to financial or administrative constraints, but the ideas should not be ignored at any cost. The ideas should be nurtured at all levels and effective measures have to be taken into consideration so that the patients get the ultimate benefit from these ideas. We wish best of success to the Student Council in all their deliberations on future improvements of the Medical Institution. Let the patients get the best possible satisfaction, and let the Medical Institution make their ideas become a reality sooner or later, depending on various circumstances.

Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution towards India is beyond description. He dedicated his entire life with peace and non-violence in order to inspire millions of Indians to realize the importance of patience and perseverance that could convince our colonial powers to give us our legitimate rights of freedom. Finally he earned all that he desired. The only sad episode of Mahatma Gandhi’s life is that he could not hold India together and avoid an additional nation called Pakistan and then Bangla Desh. Mahatma Gandhi’s dedication thru peacefulness is extremely commendable. The Western world is truly admirable towards all that Mahatma Gandhi has given to this modern world. India owes a great deal to this great Leader who has transformed the world with a positive feeling that we all can work together by helping each other, and make this world a better place to live and prosper.

  • From Richard Thomas on Youth of our Country Under Threat of Drug Abuse – Udupi ASP Kumarchandra

Youth are an ASSET alright, but NOT those who come in the guise of taking up higher studies in colleges run by TMA Pai, and then having a time of their life by indulging in booze, sex, drugs, and a carefee life without a thought for their parents, themselves, or the society. They are already from crime and drug infested states such as UP, Bihar, Punjab, and Delhi. Drug peddlers must be eradicated/eliminated to totally stop the supply, and if there is no supply, obviously the Youth will not resort to drugs. Likewise, liquor shops might not be anywhere near the Pai institutions, but they are in abundance a little away everywhere else – so what is to stop them from purchasing and consuming in their rented apartments. The law does it’s job in investigating and curtailing and as well as arresting Drug peddlers, matka operators, etc., but they cannot touch liquor vendors. For example a very active Matka joint is operating at the City Bus Stand – Malpe Buses stand, what is the Law doing about it, Sometime ago a law was passed no liquor vendors, Bars, or Restaurants serving liquor should operate within 500M from the main road or highway – but everything is operating and thriving! Likewise, the Law is only limited to arresting, trial and final eradication/elimination lies in the hands of the Judiciary – where practically cases linger years together, and in the meantime, more criminals establish themselves to ruin the Youth and Society in general – ultimately, there is no end to this phenomenon – and no amount of Talks, Walks, or Cycling for a cause will succeed to discourage drugs or it’s abuse, alcohol, rapes, matka, illegal vendors, large holes and bad roads, dirt and garbage, and the list goes on – UNLESS THERE IS ONLY ONE GOVERNANCE AND ONE AUTHORITY TO ACT AND TAKE QUICK AND REAL LASTING ACTION You can’t have the Traffic Dept. telling bad roads and large holes in the roads is not their responsibility TO FIX AND MAKE GOOD, or the Udupi Municipality claiming the MPW to be responsible, or the Police holding the Judiciary for curtailing and eliminating the criminals, Then comes the Parties, Politicians, MLA or Dist. Incharge, etc. who just give big empty talks and hold large functions to eyewash everything.

If and when any youth becomes victimized with any influence of drugs, this will bring danger to themselves and to all those that get attached to them. Drug is a virus that spreads the influence bringing danger to the society. This is where a Church, a Temple or a Mosque becomes actively involved in influencing the youth the possibilities of all dangers to the entire neighborhood. We must find every possible way to eradicate any kind of ill-effects that can spread as a result of drugs usage. All these guys are simply talking about tourism, etc. when they didn’t even repair the crater filled bad roads in and around Udupi when they had the opportunity to do so for the past 25 days when it had stopped raining. The Udupi Municipality and the MPW are not showing their efficiency in fulfilling the basic needs of the local people, how can they contribute towards tourism! Simply promoting wine does not enhance tourism – good roads, good transportation, good lighting, safety and security, and ethics are all required to accept people from all over. How can school authorities suspend a child for just sending a message to a classmates… nowadays it is mandatory for schools and colleges to have counsellors to give counselling for children… but now it shud be made mandatory to give counselling for every teacher and principal … as to how to deal with children and the problem related with children… they harass and humiliate students in such a way that some go into depression and some commit suicides…. I just can’t imagine what mental trauma this boy has gone through before ending his life… Many of us will say that for such silly thing he shouldn’t have committed suicide but m sure he must have been from a well-mannered family… so he found this to be very shameful… n ended his life…

I do not agree with this dasara vacation. Students have lost lots of classes already due to rains. If I were a student in Mangalore now, I would have felt unhappy about not making up those classes. I hope people stop appeasing to these feelings and let the students grow academically and become competetive. Mr Kamath will have other issues to discuss in and out of assembley. Who is to blame? The Girl, for being overtly sensitive or her parents for bringing her up so? The College, for over reacting to a simple ‘Hi!’ or for putting the fear of punishment into the students for interacting with the opposite sex? Or the Boy, for not being able to bear the humiliation from probably many sides. We will never understand the goings on in peoples mind before they chose to take drastic steps instead of confiding with their near ones. Sad. Another Life Snuffs itself out. Courage to the Parents to bear up with this inexplicable loss.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Bishop Dr Peter Holds 'Bandutva', Calls Leaders and Politicians to Make Mangaluru 'Smart City with a Heart'

What a beautiful message from our beloved Bishop to our Civic and Community leaders who gathered at Bishops House in order to interact with each other and share some of the thoughts and ideas in preparation of the “Smart City”. Let’s make no mistake that the “Smartness” of a vibrant City such as Mangalore is not rested entirely on the Technological innovations of the people. Mangalore can easily boast our hitherto advancement in the infrastructure of our Business environment, our Transportation and Communication, our Seaport and Airport, and also our varied involvement in the Education and Industrial advancement. We have so many bright accomplishments already in place. Now we have to sit together and share some of the highlights that we already have achieved and see what are the priorities ahead of us that suit our existing budgets plan our future cautiously and professionally. This requires research in our own hearts and see how we can all share the responsibilities with an open mind. This requires a revival of our conscience and perhaps even a change of heart so that we can welcome many more new ideas by encouraging many others to come forward and pool their ideas. We certainly wish to complement our Bishop for his foresightedness, and we pray that he will be able to group all our City leaders together with a view to seek the right consensus for an ultimate success. Our mutual respect comes mostly from our hearts, and with respect for one another we can perhaps make Mangalore the best City of India.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Udupians run 5 K to spread awareness on drug abuse

Drug misuse awareness should be spread as widely and as deeply as possible in every segment of our society all over India. Every man and a woman – young or old, should be made fully aware of the consequences that are attached to our homes and our society. Misuse of drugs can destroy any individual or any family, and the epidemic will spread rapidly all over the neighborhood and the society that we live in. Countries such as India where population explodes every second day should watch the calamities caused by the misuse of drugs. It is a contagious influence that can spread faster than any other disease. The biggest threat to the developing world such as U.S.A. is the misuse of drugs, and the Government and the people are seeking every conceivable precautions to eradicate the spread of drugs that are being smuggled into the country thru so many ways and means. The Government is even considering seriously to erect some tall and long walls all across the borders to make sure that foreign drugs are not infiltrated into the country. Misuse of drugs therefore is a cancerous situation for a country such as India where population is easily vulnerable for any consequences. We must pray for Peace and Harmony, and therefore misuse of drugs could contribute to a national disaster that we must avoid under all circumstances and at any cost.

  • From Original R.Pai on Inciting Speech during Krishna Janmashtami, Kasaragod HIV Leader Arrested

For centuries, Hindu religion has been mocked and attacked by Abrahamic religions. The ‘false gods’ and ‘idol worshiping’ are the two main talking points used over and over in these centuries. In fact, many Hindu temples were destroyed by the followers of these religions. Nobody got arrested for this ‘hate speech’. The same type of double standards are being applied on majority Christians in Western world. They are held to a much higher standards while minorities are given pass in every incident. This is the failure of liberal democracy. I hope our society learns from these mistakes and don’t encourage ‘populism’. nobody wins in a populist, fascist society.

Mangalore Airport Authority should ensure a thorough background check of all Malayalees that are employed in all the agencies at the airport from Housekeeping to Airplane servicing contractors. A high percentage of gold smuggling is reported to be carried out by these Malayalee Carriers, obviously for reputed gold dealers. Who else can afford to make such high-value purchases? By now, Mangalore Airport Authority must have profited a ton of gold from all the smuggling operations carried out by these Malayalees from this particular hub. What encourages Carriers to smuggle gold from Dubai to Mangalore Airport is the real question. Obviously, everything seems well connected and organised!

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Awareness Programme on Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging and Cyber Crime Laws held at Sahyadri College

It’s an ideal contribution on the part of Sahyadri College to come up with various gatherings and focus on the importance of avoiding the substance abuse and all other consequences that come out of it that can endanger the entire society. A country such as India where the affluence is gaining the momentum is likely to get influenced with all sorts of other temptations that can deteriorate the quality of the unique society where three major religions are blended so well. We speak on so many good occasions in America the uniqueness of India as an ever growing society where intellectual values are progressing so rapidly that will automatically bring steady flow of progress and prosperity in the ever-changing society. People are bound to embrace all kinds untimely vices as a result of growing population as well as growing economy. It is important for the society to group their ideas together and avoid all kinds of negative impacts on the society as a result of fast growth in an environment where more than ten million children are born every year and the fast progress can bring so many odd situations in the society. India is an unique nation where so many new developments can bring so many odd situations that may be difficult to control. Everything starts in the school environment where new ideas blossom, and many ideas can make a reverse curve. We pray to God that India will continue to move forward with all the positive thoughts, and that people will use all their new intelligence for the benefit of the growing population.

With any styling like straightening the cream, chemical should be applied two inches away from the scalp. But that beauty parlour person applied all the way through the scalp which led to hair loss. The beauty parlour should be sealed and that the person should be punished. It’s the fault of the beauty parlour. A warm and sincere felicitations are awaiting your Lordship, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha as you are preparing for the consecration in the near future as our 14th Bishop of Mangalore, responsible for 124 Parishes North of Kerala and South of Goa. A very prestigious yet very responsible position, because the Diocese of Mangalore has always been a powerful place where Christians have thrived for centuries as devout people of Catholic faith. We are all going thru difficult challenges in this world as Catholics. We are all obliged to lead a life of dignity as God fearing Catholics. But as Pope Francis himself is admitting while He is currently on a Holy visit to Ireland that we are facing some unusual and tough challenges where we are all accountable to so many responsibilities that we cannot deny. The Catholics of Mangalore have always proved to be not only above the National but also above the International standards. Our dedication towards humanity has always taken us far and beyond many other Indians of varied faiths because Mangalore has always been a center of secular values with the active presence of Catholic schools and colleges added with Catholic Priests and Nuns who have come to Mangalore as Missionaries more than 150 years ago. We have strongly imbedded our landmarks of dignity and integrity with a proven record of charity and generosity. You have the privilege of witnessing the magnanimous acts of nobility from 13 Bishops of Mangalore before you, and above all, you also have the gift of the presence of Bishop Aloysius who will always stand besides you and help you in all your new challenges. We pray to God, dear Bishop Peter Paul, our warm and sincere greetings as you create a new connection with the Vatican. May you remain happy and healthy, and may you remain successful in all your new undertakings as our new beloved Bishop of Mangalore.

Miss Joyce Rego has wonderful prospects ahead of her not only in Mangalore but also elsewhere in India. Since she has already established a Limited Organization under the name of Rego Events Private Limited, it appears that Lady Joyce Rego is on the right track of her long term career in Public Shows, and we are sure she will succeed in all her future ventures. We wish Joyce best of success in all her future challenges. She will certainly bring lots of success to herself, her family and also to her community. Keep up the good work, Joyce. May God help you in all your future aspirations in life. You have a long and prosperous journey ahead of you, and you will succeed ten fold.

  • From RICHARD THOMAS on Udupi Police and UDWJ Start 'Selfie with Signature Campaign' against Drug Abuse

Drug dealers and traffickers have to be dealt with severe punishment. Filing cases, prosecution, and bail being granted will not solve or contain the problem. Question is how many drug dealers and drug traffickers have been eliminated so far by the Law? Most crimes being gold smuggling, drug trafficking, cow trafficking, and murder originate from the neighbouring state – and therefore, the borders between the two K states must be manned properly –

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on St Aloysius College holds ‘Inter-faith Harmony Day’ to mark 'Bakrid' Celebration

Gathering people of all faiths in celebration of various religious occasions is one of the finest way to exhibit our mutual respect for each other regardless of our own individual faith. We have learned this important lesson ourselves while we spent nearly twentyfive years in Saudi Arabia, nearly 40 years ago. Festive occasions enable us to express our appreciation and admiration towards other faiths, and make others realize how much we treasure for each other as far as our respect for each other and our faith. Let us not hesitate to express our respect for others, and their beliefs. Let us emphasize our values towards others and their religious beliefs while we preach and practice our own faith. India is a country where the multi-cultural and multi-religious values can be demonstrated in so many ways, and thereby also influence many others to join in our beliefs. This is one way to create communal harmony and peace that will allow us to share with many others and make a difference in this “small world, a beautiful world”.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Mangalore Diocese being Good Samaritan in Aiding Kerala Flood Victims

The Diocese of Mangalore has an unique charm of its own when it comes to helping others. Mangaloreans are always in possession of a helping attitude in the event of any emergencies. People of Mangalore, regardless of their faith and culture, are always closely linked with each other, and they go out of their way to help others. Mangalore has a close connection with Kerala in all the day to day needs of the Educational, Cultural and Social relations. Mangalore depends a great deal on Kerala because we are linked with Kerala for all our daily needs and wants. We want to help Kerala because they are our close neighbors and friends.

  • From SMR on Kollur Temple contributes One crore for Kerala and 25 lakhs for Kodagu flood relief

Humanity in Kerala floods from all over the world. Latest to join Pakistanis in UAE give up one day wage for victims.Kerala’s natural disaster has affected the collective conscience of a large group of people across the world with foreign countries such as Qatar and UAE coming forward to help the flood victims. Bollywood actors, certain politicians such as BJP MP Varun Gandhi, Congress party and Aam Aadmi Party have risen to the occasion to do their bit to help their fellow Indians in Kerala. However, not everyone has been as generous towards the flood victims as some known right-wing bigots launched a vicious campaign to promote Hindutva and mock the plight of the victims. One US-based NRI and a staunch proponent of vicious Hindutva agenda, Rajiv Malhotra wrote urging his Hindutva supporters to only donate for Hindus and not victims of other faith. His vile tweet read, “Please donate to help Kerala Hindus. Christians and Muslims worldwide raising lots of money to help mainly their own ppl & agendas. Soon it emerged that Malhotra’s tweet was not in isolation as this was retweeted by Mohandas Pai, a known supporter of the BJP and the RSS. Pai is also an investor in Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV. Mohandas Pai is one of the advisers to the government of India on many areas. I’m sorry but if the hate that some right wingers are propagating here during the Kerala floods is not making you uncomfortable, you are made of stone and nothing will ever move you. These creeps are no longer in the shadows. They are all out. Brazenly spreading their propaganda. This is so bigoted I don’t have words for it. They hate women and they hate the people dying in Kerala floods. Remember that a flood does not discriminate. It does not see religion, caste, gender. Is our responsible media consider fourth column of the democracy will make this hate mongers humanity is above hatred? Jai hind

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Floods in Kerala - Changes in Pattern of Trains

India has come a long way in achieving our transportation goals all over India in order to cope with our ever-growing population. Our bus stations, our rail stations, and even our airports are pretty well occupied with the ever-increasing traffic. There is so much a nation can do, and India is doing very well under all the prevailing circumstances. More than sixty years ago, when I left Mangalore for the first time, we had only one train to Bombay, and that too from a place called Kadur where a train would go all the way to Puna en route to Dadar, Bombay. Today, we notice so many modes of transportation including dozens of daily buses and even planes thru various connections. The population of India for the past sixty years has gone up by a billion more people. This is beyond anyone’s comprehension. Yet, we are surviving as a progressive nation. We are coping with the situation with whatever new thoughts and plans. We have to be grateful to God for giving India some of the best planners who have a vision for India’s progress. There is so much that can be criticized yet there is much more to be praised and admired for who we are and where we have reached for the past sixty years, ever since we left Mangalore in search of a daily bread.

  • From RICHARD THOMAS on President-Elect of DK Bus Owners Assn Dilraj Alva Aims for Big Change in Bus Service

Mr. Dilraj Alva, congratulations on your new appointment as President of DK Bus Owner’s Association. Besides the three points that you have highlighted, the following issues are also to be looked into: 1. Overcrowding the bus, i.e. packing the bus like sardines in a tin can – it does not serve them as a comfortable and safe mode of transport. 2. BEGA BEGA this attitude of conductors must be ridden off – people must be made to comfortable board the bus and to take a seat, and only then the bus should be signalled to proceed. 3. The steps of the most buses are way high, and it is difficult of the special needs, ailing people, and the aged to board and alight the buses. 4. State Bank Bus Station must be maintained for potholes, open urination, and all types of people and even the homeless and beggars occupying the bus stops. Take a good look at this Bus Station and see for yourself. The authorities in Karnataka and more so in DK are not at all interest in the good of the people. All they are interested is in GST and give nothing in return.

It’s quite sad to see Indians still sing ‘Saaare jahan se accha’ – an Urdu song composed by Allama Iqbal (ideological father of Pakistan) even after he rewrote this song in 1910 to express his Islamic worldview. This shows a complete lack of our own history. Even our Armed Forces play this song ignoring how the song was written by ideological father of Pakistan who didn’t believe in ‘Hindustan’. No wonder India is a third-world country filled with idiots unaware of their own past. Don’t blame me for spreading the truth – Look up and read history.

In an ever-growing populated country such as India, the focus on “gender taboo” is considered to be important. The women of India will continue to bring all the important and attractive attention from the rest of the world because Indian women are active and brilliant. Indian women are becoming increasingly important in our Armed Forces, Aviation and also in many Law Enforcement Divisions. The ratio of women to men is becoming closer than ever before. Our Educational systems as well as our Medical systems, Indian women are contributing a great deal, and this trend will continue to grow. • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on ICYM Mangalore Diocese celebrates National Youth Sunday all over the Diocese

Diocesan youth are growing and multiplying year after year. While many of the Christian youth are leaving their homes in search of better prospects many of the young men and women stay behind and remain in their native place as long as they can. These young men and women watch the TV programs, listen to radio commentaries and read all kinds of magazines and newspapers and get familiarized with all that is going on in the rest of the world. Many of the youth are ambitious in achieving what others achieve in different parts of the world. These young men and women also come out with their own desires and share their ideas with many others for their support. Our young men and women therefore deserve all kinds of encouragement so that they are able to vent all their ideas and feelings and seek other’s support. This is where our Parishes are involved for their active interventions and support. Whenever there are financial contributions parents, guardians or even the Parish priests become little hesitant to come forward. This is where our young men and women get frustrated for lack of support. This is where we have to get involved and study their plans and aspirations and see how we can motivate them and fulfill their desires. All plans and programs generated by our youth do not have to be implemented immediately. But these plans need the basic support and assurance from all those that are responsible, so that these plans can be discussed and investigated for gradual considerations and implementations. Our youth need our basic support so that they remain satisfied and the life moves along.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on With Theme 'Sustentavel' St Aloysius College hosts ' Econovanza 2018'- Economics Fest

The name “Econovanza” is a new name for myself. It is also a fanciful name for young students of St. Aloysius College to appreciate that the 139 year old focus on Economics has successfully produced thousands of students to groom themselves and molded themselves into an Educational discipline that has produced so many students bright in their dedication of planning, budgeting, thinking and acting in order to end up with a successful bottom line in whatever they do. Exhorbitant spending has become a chronic disease with most of the business entrepreneurs where they have diverted a large chunk of their capitol for various projects with the hope that they will recover all their investment in a timely manner. Many of them have succeeded while many of them failed. So many major Corporations have turned into a profitable venture whereas many have collapsed. We all have to take certain risks in life, but so long as we have exerted our wisdom and finance properly and cautiously we should always end up with a green bottom line. We are proud that our students have been blessed with all the favorable exposure in their pursuit of sustainable Economics, and we wish them continued success in all that they learn in their Academic studies.

It is Mrs Mangalore and not Kudla as reported. Kudla is a forgotten name given by the ancient people. Why do you call Chennai as Madras? Why call Calcutta as Kolkata? Move with the times man. Mangalore is a cosmopolitan city and no longer confined to Kodiyalbail area. Is Chicago just about West Devon street? See the big picture and do not confine yourself to the narrow walls of division. Kodiyal was what Konkani speaking people of yesteryears referred to. Kudla was the terminology used by Tulu speaking population. It is Mangalore, derived from Mangala Devi.

We were truly impressed to see the progress achieved by Japan over the past few decades, particularly their pollution control and the general cleanliness all over Japan. I doubt very much if they had just Mexican dishes they may not be successful. In India all ethnic outlets have local dishes. General public are not exposed to other foods as we Americans are. Besides In USA all are immigrants except Native American Indians. All immigrants bring their knowledge of their own regional authentic food. Just like India different regions in Mexico has different variations of Mexican food. I was fortunate to taste food from different regions. In India I doubt very much the owners have studied or travelled to learn how to cook authentic Mexican fare. The sign as Mexican restaurant is just a sales gimmick to be different than other restaurants. One develops a taste for food all over the world. It is acquired taste. I for one likes to mix most foods with chilies, hot sauce, habanero etc yo spice it. Certain parts of Mexico do not like spicy.
